I’m really looking forward to us taking our kids to the Portland Rose Festival CityFair this weekend! My daughter will be excited to ride the Ferris Wheel, and I’m looking forward to the traditional corn dogs. I also want to try out the deep-fried rose petals — I can’t imagine what those must be like!
Beyond that, my family and I will enjoy a low-key holiday weekend with family and friends, and we’ll be hosting a barbeque on Monday.
There are a few other events happening, however, if you live in the Portland area:
- If CityFair is a bit too loud and crowded for you, try the Multnomah County Fair instead, over at Oaks Park amusement park. The petting zoo and pony rides are great for kids, and children and adults alike will probably enjoy the magic show, miniature golf and go carts.
- The Memorial Day PDX Urban Wine Tour – Some of my friends and I have taken these Short Bus wine tours, and they’re fantastic fun! It’s a great way to visit a number of Portland wineries without worrying about driving. Interacting with the others on the same tour is also often a blast.
- Hip Chicks do Wine is another great wine tasting option, and is very cheap — only $12 if you pay in advance, and includes up to 12 wines, plus nibbles and live music.
- The Dragon Boat Festival is a fantastic, kid-friendly event, and it’s for an apropos cause for the holiday, since proceeds go to help local disabled veterans. Hosted by Paddle for Life.
- An interesting sounding new exhibit is opening up at the World Forestry Center – “Secret Art of Dr. Suess” – I personally don’t want to miss this one – too intriguing! It’ll be open until August, so I intend to check it out later this summer.
- Because it’s Portland, my token weird event is the “Zombie Prom” at Bossanova Ballroom on Monday night. This year’s theme is “Night at the O’Scars”. Here’s your chance to dress up as zombies or your favorite Walking Dead characters, and compete with others for best contests — you might get tapped to be the Prom King or Queen! Why list this one? Well, we have to “Keep Portland Weird”, don’t we?
