You’re also going to find out that I’m a total Disney geek. I don’t know if it started with the Read-Along records (“When Tinker Bell waves her wand – bbblllliiiinnnggg – turn the page!”) or the Disneyland book my grandfather gave me around age 3, but however the innoculation happened, it was very effective. I’m happy that my kids share my passion, and I’m even happier that Portland has one of the fancy-shmancy new Imagination Park Disney Stores!

Happy Groundhog Day!

by Jeannette Tomanka
Punxsutawney Phil at age 130

             Punxsutawney Phil at age 130

Well, here we are, February 2, Groundhog Day, that infamous day when the country looks to a large rodent to predict the weather. How did this all start? Did the folks in 1887 get tired of the weathermen always being wrong and decide a large gopher could do just as well?

Punxsutawney Phil could be Celtic, rooted in the Pagan holiday of Imbolc, when a hibernating animal casting a shadow predicted six more weeks of winter. It’s more likely that Phil is of German descent, though, with all the German settlers in that part of Pennsylvania. The German tradition holds that blue skies on February 2, Candlemas Day, predict more cold weather. Somehow the hedgehog got involved, and the myth became that if the skies were clear, a hedgehog would see his shadow. When the Germans settled in the New World, the tradition transferred to groundhogs, and in 1887, Punxsutawney Phil was born. He now lives a couple of miles outside Punxsutawney with his wife, Phyllis, and daughter, Phelicia.

What most people don’t realize is that there has only been one P.Phil. Every year he’s given a sip of Groundhog Juice, a secret recipe that gives him seven more years of life. Other fun facts about this famous rodent can be found here.

So how do we celebrate Groundhog Day? I will admit most of our traditions stem from the Bill Murray movie, which is one of our favorites, and which we watch after our dinner of leftovers (you know, the same dinner we had the previous evening). We all drink Groundhog Juice (a secret recipe, of course) for 7 more years of good life, and have a shadow-puppet show. How do you celebrate?

Just Another Star Wars Post….

by Jeannette Tomanka

imgres

Ok, I wasn’t going to jump in the Star Wars pool, but I must, because it has done what I wanted a good movie to do for a long time: knock Avatar (aka Pocahontas with Blue People) out of the No. 1 spot at the box office.

The Force Awakens isn’t an epic film. Neither was A New Hope in 1977. It was just a fun, good guy-bad guy romp through space at a time when we were looking to the stars. Star Trek had redefined our view of deep space just 10 years earlier. Men had first set foot on the moon just 8 years before. The space shuttle program was well underway, and, in fact, the first experimental orbiter, Enterprise, first flew just 3 months before A New Hope hit theaters. We were space-crazy! Take a good story and add in perfectly-cast, well-written characters, and you may not get an epic film, but it will be fun to watch.

Thankfully, Episode VII returned to those roots. I did not like the “prequels,” images-2(Episodes I-III), mostly because I felt like they were just too “heavy.” Maybe they took
themselves too seriously. Maybe since I knew how the story went, I just didn’t care to see how Anakin devolved into the bad guy. Maybe it was the casting. I don’t really know. All I know is, I was excited to know George Lucas wasn’t involved in the new movie, and thrilled that JJ Abrams was! Abrams did a marvelous job with the Star Trek reboot, protecting the characters while taking the franchise in a new direction.

I happily followed Abrams to the Galaxy Far, Far Away, and I wasn’t disappointed. images-3The story of a Stormtrooper with a conscience is interesting. Seeing “old friends” after so many years was wonderful (although R2D2 was conspicuously absent most of the film). And of course, we all spent time trying to figure out who Rey is (Luke’s daughter? Han and Leia’s daughter? My guess – she’s not connected to anyone by blood). We laughed, cried, cheered, sighed, and left the theater anxious for the next installment; all the marks of a good movie.

So why did this movie rocket (haha!) to the No. 1 spot in the All-Time Highest-Grossing Film (Domestically) in just 3 (THREE) weeks?!? Take a look at the top films as of this week:

  1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  2. Avatar
  3. Titanic
  4. Jurassic World (also a fun movie)
  5. Avengers
  6. Furious 7
  7. Avengers: Age of Ultron
  8. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 2
  9. Frozen
  10. Iron Man 3

….Do you see a trend? If you keep going down the list, you see lots of robots, space travel, spies, fast cars, magic, fun, hobbits, dinosaurs, adventure, and subjects that look like they should appeal to kids (although I wouldn’t classify all of them as kid movies). Could it be that when we go to the theaters in droves, we go to become kids again? Do we go to be transported back to a time when imagination ruled, the sky wasn’t the limit (there was no limit), and the good guys won? Do we love these movies as adults because in most of these, the underdog comes out on top, in spite of the overwhelming odds against? And do we love them because the bad guys are usually very obvious (even though there’s the occasional Heinous Act of Betrayal), while in our real lives we often can’t spot the Meanies?

I find it interesting that most of the movies in the Top 100 are flat-out escapes from reality. And most of them never got even a glance from Oscar, which is ok with me, as I’ll explain in a later post. I’m glad there are still some big-time moviemakers who are making what people want to see, rather than what will win awards. To those Masters of Imagination, I just have one thing to say:

There’s Still Time to Catch Movies in the Park!

by Jeannette Tomanka

You may have figured out by now that we are movie-holics. We catch a few on the big screen (Pixar, images-4space movies, and action movies), some we wait for the Blu-Ray, and during the summer we love to pack up the blanket and a picnic and watch movies in the park. We have a bit of a dilemma today, though, because Willy Wonka (the Gene Wilder one) is showing at Wilkes Park, and The Lego Movie is at Warner Pacific College. We may be flipping a coin!!

Here’s the line-up for the rest of the season. I left out some movies that aren’t age-appropriate for my kids, but here’s a link to the full line-up.

Sunday, August 9, April Hill Park – A Bug’s Life

Thursday, August 13, Oregon Park – Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

Saturday, August 15, Concordia University – Paddington (we haven’t seen this one yet – have you?)

Sunday, August 16, Arbor Lodge Park – Mary Poppins

Wednesday, August 19, Wellington Park – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Thursday, August 20, Brooklyn Park – The Wizard of Oz

Friday, August 21, Laurelhurst Park – Cinderella

Tuesday, August 25, Mt Scott Park – 101 Dalmatians

Friday, August 28, Dawson Park – Labyrinth

Saturday, August 29, Spring Garden Park – Back to the Future

Saturday, September 5, Hamilton Park – Maleficent

Sunday, September 6, Overlook Park – Toy Story

Friday, September 11, Multnomah Arts Center – Big Hero 6

If the Summer’s Too Hot, Check out These Cool Movies!

by Jeannette Tomanka

Yes, I am all about spending time outdoors in the summer, but some days are just made for indoor activities – ’cause, you know, it does occasionally rain or get really hot in Portland. And occasionally there’s a movie that just demands you see it on the big screen.

imgres-1Like Jurassic World. Even if you have a 60-inch TV screen at home, dinosaurs are best viewed on a theater screen (so is Chris Pratt – sorry, hubby, but it’s true). My kids have only seen Jurassic Park on the TV screen, so we were concerned about the intensity of these beasties on such a large scale. While my youngest did wrap around Daddy’s arm for some of the action, overall they were fine, and jabbered happily about the film all the way home. I would caution parents with children under 10, but for older children and adults, this movie is great fun. And by the way, it’s not necessary – and actually not recommended since they were not very good – to have seen the two sequels to Jurassic Park before seeing Jurassic World, but seeing the original is a good idea.

For all ages, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out is a must-see. The characters and visuals will appeal to all imagesages, thought the intricacies of the plot might go over the heads of viewers under the age of 13. It is quite complex as far as plots go, but handled well. I personally thought a few minutes could have been cut out to move matters along a little faster, but in all fairness, the added footage just made you love the characters more.

We haven’t made it to The Minion Movie or Pixels yet – have you? What did you think?

Ok, this guy isn’t actually in the movie, but we love love love Lego people!

Twelve Days of Christmas Movies

by Jeannette

Whew! What happened to December?? This time of year always seems to go in fast-forward, but this year seems to have been in a particular hurry. We try to slow it down a little by watching a movie every night, kind of a “movie advent.” We put the names of our favorite holiday movies in a hat, then draw one every night that the kids are out of school. Here are the ones in the hat this year:

* Santa Claus is Coming to Town – This is my personal favorite of the stop-motion classics. More to follow….

imgres-2* Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – This one has to be on the list. It just has to be.

* Last Holiday (Queen Latifah, LL Cool J) – This is a surprisingly sweet and funny story about a woman who’s told she’s dying, so she takes a trip of a lifetime. My kids always giggle when she arrives at the Hotel Pupp (pronounced “poop”).

* White Christmas (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye) – Fun fact about this one: Vera-Ellen wasn’t much of a singer (her parts were actually sung by Rosemary Clooney or Trudy Stevens), and Rosemary Clooney wasn’t much of a dancer. Knowing that, it’s easy to see how they worked around this, but until I read this, I never noticed how little Rosemary Clooney danced in the film.

* The Santa Clause and The Santa Clause 2 (Tim Allen) – This is a case of the sequel being at least as good as the first one. We don’t care for the third installment, though.

* A Christmas Story – My kids haven’t reached a full appreciation of this oneimgres-1 yet, but they love the leg lamp.

* Muppet Christmas Carol – It just wouldn’t be Christmas without Kermie!

* National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – Another one that is appreciated more as you get older.

* While You Were Sleeping – A sweet movie that is completely unrealistic, but nice to watch.

* Miracle on 34th Street (either one) – This is another one that just must be on the list. Believe!!

imgres

* Scrooged (Bill Murray) – One of the best version of A Christmas Carol, and classic Bill Murray.

* It’s a Wonderful Life – My kids haven’t reached a full appreciation of this one either, but I think it definitely resonates more with adults. It’s still full of good lessons for kids: every time you do the right thing, it reaches further than you’ll ever know.

Hot cocoa recommended – “Cocoa is superior!” (Robot Santa, The Santa Clause 2).

Movie Review: Disney’s Big Hero 6

by Jeannette

I am an admitted Disneyphile, and I’ve been accused of being a little biased, but when it comes to Big Hero 6, all I can say is, “They’ve done it again.”

Disney's 54th Animated Feature is not what you expect!

Disney’s 54th Animated Feature is not what you expect!

It is based on a Marvel story, but it is not your typical superhero movie. The main characters are a 14-year-old robotics genius and an inflatable “health companion” named Baymax. Nothing is what you expect (and of course I will not include any spoilers here) – I certainly didn’t expect Disney to make uber-nerds look so cool! As the parent of a developing uber-nerd (possibly 2), I think that was my favorite part of the movie. However, it wasn’t a “stay-in-school” preachy message, it seemed to me to be a very heartfelt homage to the super-smart folks who make the world go ’round.

While it won’t reach the fever frenzy of Frozen (nothing will for many years, I predict), Big Hero 6 is definitely a hit. And like Frozen, it is a cross-gender hit – boys loved Frozen (a little unexpectedly), and girls love BH6. I was recently in my favorite store when a group of 4- to 10-year-old girls came in, and the squealing when they saw Baymax rivaled a Taylor Swift concert. And also like Frozen, there are so many layers to the movie, appealing to every age, that it was fun for the adults in the audience, too, who outnumbered the kids at the showing we saw.

Hiro, the hero of the film, and his health companion Baymax, in "armor-up" mode.

Treat yourself this holiday weekend and check out Hiro and Baymax’s adventure. Then let me know that you think! Oh, and don’t bother seeing it in 3-D; you won’t lose any visuals (which are stunning!) in the 2-D version.

Our Favorite Halloween Movies

by Jeannette

imagesWe are so excited that Halloween is on a Friday this year!! We like to make scary snacks and watch a movie, but we usually have to limit it to one movie because it’s a school night. But this year, with it being on Friday, we’re planning a marathon that could last all weekend!

I don’t really like the typical Halloween movies that top the internet lists – like Halloween and all its sequels, or the equally cliche Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. My whole family has contributed to this list, so it’s pretty varied. And here we go!

The Family Titles (in no particular order)

1. Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia, which to me is the perfect telling of Hallow’s Eve and the following All Saints Day

2. The Ghost and Mr Chicken, a Don Knotts classic

3. Arsenic and Old Lace, which makes this list because it’s set on Halloween and stars the perfectly terrifying Raymond Massey, but it’s one of our favorite movies of all time

4. Tower of Terror, based on the awesome Disney attraction of the same name

5. Beetlejuice, a modern classic whose “Day-O” scene still almost makes me wet my pants laughing

6. The Others, perhaps the creepiest of the family movies, but my kids love it

7. Nosferatu, the original silent film that’s just macabre – as is the film Shadow of the Vampire about the making of the film, starring the goosebump-inducing John Malkovich

imgres-1After the Kids are in Bed

1. Any Vincent Price movie, but especially House of Wax or House on Haunted Hill

2. Young Frankenstein (“that’s ‘Fronkensteen'”), which never gets old

3. Little Shop of Horrors, the 1986 Rick Moranis version

4. Sleepy Hollow, the Johnny Depp one, because it has the ever-terrifying Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman

5. Fright Night, the Chris Sarandon version, although I love David Tennant as Peter Vincent in the remake, and I adore Anton Yelchin, who plays Charlie Brewster

6. Odd Thomas, speaking of Anton Yelchin. This is a new addition to the list, since the movie just came out in 2013.

Do you have any Halloween favorites that don’t usually make “The List”? Please share – we’re always looking for good movies!images-1

Maleficent is Magnificent!

by Jeannette

MaleficentThe most recent Disney film, Maleficent, brought in $90 million its opening weekend. My husband and I contributed to that when we went to “preview” it before taking the kids. While my kids don’t spook easily, the trailers make the movie look very dark and intense, and when we read the story about how Brad and Angelina’s daughter had to play Aurora as a young child because no other child would come near “Maleficent,” we just wanted to take a look for ourselves. We took the kids the next day.

This is another clever film by Disney. I’m not going to include spoilers, but I will say it’s not Read More→
