You’re also going to find out that I’m a total Disney geek. I don’t know if it started with the Read-Along records (“When Tinker Bell waves her wand – bbblllliiiinnnggg – turn the page!”) or the Disneyland book my grandfather gave me around age 3, but however the innoculation happened, it was very effective. I’m happy that my kids share my passion, and I’m even happier that Portland has one of the fancy-shmancy new Imagination Park Disney Stores!

Happy Groundhog Day!

by Jeannette Tomanka
Punxsutawney Phil at age 130

             Punxsutawney Phil at age 130

Well, here we are, February 2, Groundhog Day, that infamous day when the country looks to a large rodent to predict the weather. How did this all start? Did the folks in 1887 get tired of the weathermen always being wrong and decide a large gopher could do just as well?

Punxsutawney Phil could be Celtic, rooted in the Pagan holiday of Imbolc, when a hibernating animal casting a shadow predicted six more weeks of winter. It’s more likely that Phil is of German descent, though, with all the German settlers in that part of Pennsylvania. The German tradition holds that blue skies on February 2, Candlemas Day, predict more cold weather. Somehow the hedgehog got involved, and the myth became that if the skies were clear, a hedgehog would see his shadow. When the Germans settled in the New World, the tradition transferred to groundhogs, and in 1887, Punxsutawney Phil was born. He now lives a couple of miles outside Punxsutawney with his wife, Phyllis, and daughter, Phelicia.

What most people don’t realize is that there has only been one P.Phil. Every year he’s given a sip of Groundhog Juice, a secret recipe that gives him seven more years of life. Other fun facts about this famous rodent can be found here.

So how do we celebrate Groundhog Day? I will admit most of our traditions stem from the Bill Murray movie, which is one of our favorites, and which we watch after our dinner of leftovers (you know, the same dinner we had the previous evening). We all drink Groundhog Juice (a secret recipe, of course) for 7 more years of good life, and have a shadow-puppet show. How do you celebrate?

There’s Still Time to Catch Movies in the Park!

by Jeannette Tomanka

You may have figured out by now that we are movie-holics. We catch a few on the big screen (Pixar, images-4space movies, and action movies), some we wait for the Blu-Ray, and during the summer we love to pack up the blanket and a picnic and watch movies in the park. We have a bit of a dilemma today, though, because Willy Wonka (the Gene Wilder one) is showing at Wilkes Park, and The Lego Movie is at Warner Pacific College. We may be flipping a coin!!

Here’s the line-up for the rest of the season. I left out some movies that aren’t age-appropriate for my kids, but here’s a link to the full line-up.

Sunday, August 9, April Hill Park – A Bug’s Life

Thursday, August 13, Oregon Park – Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

Saturday, August 15, Concordia University – Paddington (we haven’t seen this one yet – have you?)

Sunday, August 16, Arbor Lodge Park – Mary Poppins

Wednesday, August 19, Wellington Park – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Thursday, August 20, Brooklyn Park – The Wizard of Oz

Friday, August 21, Laurelhurst Park – Cinderella

Tuesday, August 25, Mt Scott Park – 101 Dalmatians

Friday, August 28, Dawson Park – Labyrinth

Saturday, August 29, Spring Garden Park – Back to the Future

Saturday, September 5, Hamilton Park – Maleficent

Sunday, September 6, Overlook Park – Toy Story

Friday, September 11, Multnomah Arts Center – Big Hero 6

July 31 is Jump for Jelly Beans Day!

by Jeannette Tomanka

images-1We love any excuse to celebrate sweet stuff, as you’ve probably figured out by now. This obscure “food holiday” is particularly fun, since it involves one of our favorite candies and a favorite activity – jumping!

00000793

WARNING: Playing at JJ Jump will result in extreme static build-up – your kids will look like science experiments for several hours afterwards!

April 22 is National Jelly Bean Day, according to the Food Calendar, but July 31 is Jump for Jelly Beans Day, which means you must do more than just appreciate these little candy gems – you have to show your love by leaping and jumping. You can, of course, do this in your own house or yard, with or without the help of jump ropes or trampolines, or you can visit a local house of jumpage, like Sky High Sports or JJ Jump in Clackamas.

Jelly Beans have been popular since their creation, but Jelly Belly tapped a whole new generation when they created “Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans” for the Harry Potter world, and included such, um, odd flavors as ear wax, grass, vomit, and earthworm. We bring this up because Jump for Jelly Beans Day happens to fall on Harry Potter’s birthday, so your celebration should (cautiously) include some Bertie Bott’s.

Happy National Strawberry Parfait Day!

by Jeannette Tomanka

Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits, and they are the quintessential fruit of lazy summer days! Today is National Strawberry Parfait Day as described by the mysterious powers-that-be, so I recommend that everybody celebrate this with their families like I do!

National Strawberry Parfait Day!

Depending on how you make it, Strawberry Parfait can actually be pretty healthy!

One can create the beautiful layers using frozen yogurt instead of ice cream, and with graham cracker crumbs diluted down with granola and whipped cream. If you’re going increasingly plant-based diet as I am, you could use an almond milk ice cream or coconut milk based ice cream, and I’ve just discovered this really great soy-based “whipped cream”: Read More→

Small Business Saturday

by Jeannette

2014_SBS

A few years ago, American Express launched a concept called “Small Business Saturday” that happens after Black Friday and before Cyber Monday. The idea is to support family-owned, non-big box, non-mega-chain restaurants, retail stores, service providers, etc. If you read my post earlier this week, you know I’m not a fan of Black Friday, but I have gotten out and tried to support small businesses. I’m a big fan of non-chain restaurants; in fact, 90% of the time we eat out it’s at a small, family-owned places. I admit I don’t shop many “boutique” shops for clothing, because it’s just too expensive, but we’ve had a few consignment shops open in the area recently, and those are fun. I mostly shop little stores for unique gifts, so this day happening in the holiday season is perfect.

Check the American Express website for participating businesses, or just wander around town and stop somewhere that looks interesting. Remember, most of these businesses don’t have robust websites, so don’t count on a web search to find them. An old-fashioned phone book might work better! Happy shopping!

Portland Haunted Houses for Halloween

by Jeannette

Jack-O-Lantern PortlandI can’t go to haunted houses as frequently as I used to, now that I have kids, but my husband and I still sometimes do, if we can get a baby sitter.

One really great guide to haunted houses in Portland (as well as throughout Oregon) is Haunt World. You can also find haunted hayrides, corn mazes, pumpkin patches or farms, and ghost tours on that site. Read More→

Back to School Blues

by Jeannette

Well, it’s that time of year. Time to get the lunch boxes out, pack the new school supplies, shop for new clothes. Time to go back to school.

Crayons - Back To School Supplies

Crayons and back-to-school supplies – an annual mecca to the stores!

Sigh.

Most of my mommy friends are excited and glad that time is here. I’m not. I love having my kids at home with me. Well, we haven’t exactly been home all summer! We’ve gone on scavenger hunts, hikes, adventures of all kinds. Read More→

What is Labor Day, Really?

Happy International Bacon Day!!!

by Jeannette
The Bacon-Weave Taco

The Bacon-Weave Taco

So you’ve probably figured out by now that I’m a foodie. I love food. I find simple delights in tastes, textures, combinations – everything to do with food. And one of my favorites is bacon. Yes, I am a bacon lover. I have eaten peanut butter and bacon milkshakes and only complained that the bacon wasn’t chopped finely enough to get through the straw. I have eaten maple and bacon doughnuts (thank you, Voodoo Doughnuts!). I have bacon-flavored mints (surprisingly good), bacon-flavored popcorn in my pantry, and a bacon-less refrigerator is not tolerated in my house. 😉

Bacon is probably one of the top reasons I’ll never turn completely vegetarian, although I definitely enjoy eating vegan/vegetarian meals frequently.

I’m not going to get into the science of bacon, or its nutritional pros and cons, but it’s like anything else – fine in moderation. Anything is bad for you if you consume too much, even water. This post is dedicated to bacon lovers everywhere and the people who love bacon lovers. Read More→

Happy Birthday, Donald Duck!

by Jeannette

Donald DuckOn June 9, 1934, the world met a cantankerous, half-dressed duck named Donald in a cartoon called The Wise Little Hen. Originally thought to be a friend to Mickey Mouse, this crabby fowl has actually been more of a rival, constantly trying to steal Mickey’s limelight. Some would argue that he has: he has starred in more cartoons than any other Disney character (178 to Mickey’s 176), including many wartime and children’s educational films (one of my favorite childhood memories is herding into the elementary school auditorium to Read More→
